In Cleveland Dredging Fight, A War Of Standards

.

Here is why we need to defend our clean water and prevent Cyanobacteria algae blooms……Who will boat, swim or fish in our lake Erie if the results may cause a neurodegenerative disease?

Ken

BMAA stands for beta-Methylamino-L-alanine which is or BMAA, is a non-proteinogenic amino acid produced by cyanobacteria. The top green box in the EPA newsletter provides a link to a story on the research that links BMAA to neurological disorders including ALS, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.

For background information, I suggest reading this March 2012 story that was published in a journal that is part of the US National Library of Medicine’s online material titled, The Emerging Science of BMAA: Do Cyanobacteria Contribute to Neurodegenerative Disease?

The well written, detailed article explains BMAA in easily understandable terms.
